A Dead Djinn in Cairo by P. Djèlí Clark (2016)

A must read

Book cover blurb

Egypt, 1912. In Cairo, the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities investigate disturbances between the mortal and the (possibly) divine.

What starts off as an odd suicide case for Special Investigator Fatma el-Sha’arawi leads her through the city’s underbelly as she encounters rampaging ghouls, saucy assassins, clockwork angels, and a plot that could unravel time itself.

My Review

I picked up this book because a reviewer I trust and enjoy was singing its praises. Thanks, Mara.

I tend not to read books on Kindle, I prefer paper in the hand, but this story is only available in digital format so…

If you'd explained the content of this book, the entities involved and even the setting, I'm pretty sure I would have said 'No thanks, not for me.' Thankfully no one did explain those things to me because I'd be kicking myself if I'd missed out on this gem.

This is such a tightly-knit construction of a story, there are virtually no wasted words. Yet it manages to offer up engaging characters, intriguing world elements and tense and entertaining confrontations. And it's all tied together with some beautiful wordplay.

At only 47 pages you owe it to yourself to give it a try. Believe me, you won't be disappointed...well, ok, you might be, but I doubt I it.
